WINTER INDOOR FLAG LEAGUE

Flag football is a variation of tackle football, which everyone is familiar with, but does not require equipment and is a non-contact sport. It is also one of the fastest growing sports around the world! Why? It’s a fast-paced game, easy to learn without the concerns sometimes associated with contact sports, and best of all it is incredibly fun. Many of the same skills needed in tackle football are also used in flag football, such as throwing, catching, hand-offs and running…all in a safe and welcoming environment.

The goal of our league is to provide an environment that enables children to learn and have fun. They will experience and adopt the principles of teamwork, discipline, dedication, and sportsmanship. Participation in our league is open to all boys and girls.

Our leagues are made possible through the tireless efforts of volunteers who display an extraordinary amount of commitment and hard work, ensuring that our league is a positive influence in the lives of our children through providing a healthy outlet for children. Best of all..anyone can play – no previous football experience is necessary!

SEASON START DATE:

The season usually starts the first part of December and runs through to Feb or March.
Registration will open mid October 2022 for the season.

AGE DIVISIONS (2022/23 Winter season)
Player ages are determined by the year of birth (not their actual age at the time of registration). The following divisions are available in our Winter Flag season:

5 A-SIDE DIVISIONS

5 players on the field from each team at a time

U10 (born in 2013/14/15)
U12 (born in 2011/12)
U14 (born in 2009/10)
U16 (born in 2007/08)
High School Girls (currently attending grade 9-12)

7v7 VARSITY DIVISION

7 players on the field from each team at a time

U16 players only eligible if registering as part of a team.
Individual U16 players are not eligible for 7v7.

- U18 (born in 2005-2008)

How many players do we need for a team?

5 a-side teams

minimum of 10 registered players
maximum of 12 registered players

7 a-side teams

minimum of 14 registered players (maximum 16)

Can I register even if I don’t have a team?

Yes, you can register as an individual to be assigned to a team that do not have a full roster. In some cases teams are made up of individuals to create a “free agent” team. You can even list names of friends to be assigned to the same team!

How long is the season?

The League runs from December to approximately early March. All games will be played Saturdays with one game per week.

How many games are in the season?

The total number of games including playoffs and championships is determined by the total number of teams and facility times available.

Where do the Winter Flag games take place?

All Games will take place at the University of Winnipeg – Axworthy Health and RecPlex.

Where do teams practice?

Practices are the responsibility of coaches who will need to find locations themselves, if desired. This is intended to be a recreational league and we encourage participation and fun more than competition, especially at the younger ages. The rules of the game are learned very quickly and even teams that do not find themselves able to practice between games will get a lot of excitement and fun from participating!

Most teams will not practice during the winter season due to the difficulty in finding a gym or other facility to practice, however this does not impact the childrens ability to learn the game and have a lot of fun!

How much does flag football cost?

The league fee is $200 plus the 2022 Annual Membership and Insurance if not paid previously in the 2022 calendar year.

What do I need to provide?

– Good indoor running shoes or cleats (soccer or football) and lots of energy!
– Solid coloured shorts without pockets. (These can be difficult to find and can be purchased through our office)
– Your registration fee includes two game shirts to keep (one home, and one jersey)
